The craft of candle making has been around for about 5000 years. With its origins in the rush light,
the Egyptians and Cretans pioneered the early use of the candle for light. Candles have been made
from various materials over the ages. Tallow, beeswax, bayberry, Spermaceti, and parafin have all
been used at various times as candle making materials. Candle making for centuries was a laborious,
hand crafted process. Today, the process has been automated, making the job of candle making easier. The craft of candle making requires a slew of different materials. Parafin wax, wicks, molds, and other mateials go into the making of candles. Many crafters use the old time tested methods of making candles from scratch out of the candles basic ingrediants of wax, stearine, luster and dye. Newer materials like gels and crystals have made the candle making craft much easier to engage in. Children can easily make candles from crystals in a process similiar to sand art. There are many choices for the crafter to use to make candles. The traditional method of melting wax and adding stearine, luster, color and scent has been bolstered with the addition of gels and wax crystals. Candles may be molded, or wax can be poured into various types of containers of glass or metal. Molded candles can be decorated in various ways from painting to gluing beads on them. You can craft floating candles, pillar candles or taper candles. Making candles isn't difficult. The craft can easily be done at home using fairly simple equipment found in most kitchens, though the pans, boilers and other items used to make candles should preferably not be used for food making. |
