![]() Acrylic varnishes are great companion products for acrylic paints. Like their paint counterparts, they can be cleaned up with water. A varnish coat over a painted project will protect the paint from handling, scratches, and if you use an exterior varnish, it will provide a weather-proof coating so you can put your painted projects outdoors. The varnishes can also be used alone to protect woodcarving, woodburning, or woodworking projects. Varnishes are available in gloss, matte, or satin in both interior and exterior finishes. You will find them in both two ounce and eight ounce bottles, depending on your needs. Spray cans of varnish are easy to apply and are also found in gloss, matte, and satin. Keep in mind that if an acrylic paint is going to be varnished, acrylic varnish must be used, as oil based varnish may cause the paint to smear. Wood surfaces may be prepared for painting or varnishing by using a sealer first. The sealer helps fill in wood pores, creating a more even paint or varnish job. Options for sealer include two ounce, eight ounce, or spray can. Wood counter tops, tables, and woodwork can also be protected by using a polymer coating. This is a two part medium which is poured on. It is self-leveling and impervious to chemicals, hot plates, food and beverages. An aged look can be imparted to any hard surface by using Crackle. The surface is first coated with a heavy coat of acrylic paint which is allowed to dry. A thin coat of crackle is then applied. Apply a second coat of contrasting paint about twenty minutes later, not allowing the crackle coat to dry completely. The second coat should begin to crack almost immediatly. Results will vary according to humidity, dryness of the paints and other factors causing each project to be unique. FolkArt Pearlcote Pearl Glaze provides a pearlescent finish to virtually any surface. It is non-yellowing and dries to a tough, flexible finish. If a high gloss finish is desired, it may be coated with FolkArt HiShine glaze. This product will provide a high-gloss finish to any other surface, too. Both products come in a six ounce spray can for easy application! You can make any surface look like precious metal with leafing paint. Silver, brass, and gold can be applied to a variety of surfaces including wood, ceramics, plaster, bisque, and primed metal. Another interesting paint product is called Clear-Tex from DecoArt. This is a water based texturing medium. Add any acrylic paint to this stuff to create textured, stonelike finishes. Create some very unique craft projects with this paint additive. Spooky effects may be achieved with Glo-It, also from Deco-Art. This is a glow-in-the-dark medium which may be used alone, or mixed with other acrylic paints. Paint step edges, stars on the ceiling with stencils, or for Halloween projects. It can also be used as a face paint to really cause a stir. By now you can see that there are a multitude of different craft paints which can be used for many different applications. All of these paints may be used alone or in combination with each other to create endless possibilities for your craft or hobby needs.
