PAINT THE WORLD

There aren't too many times that you'll need to paint the world, but many times a craft or hobby project will need a little color to brighten it up. This is where craft paints come into the picture. Craft paints are ideal for many craft, home decorating, hobby, and touch-up projects as they are available in so many different types for a multitude of applications. The two ounce bottles are perfect for the hobbyist or crafter who needs small amounts of individual colors of high quality paint. Some colors are packaged in larger eight ounce bottles. Types of craft paints include acrylic paints, fabric paints, acrylic varnishes, poster paints, and ultra gloss enamels.

The most versatile craft paints are the acrylic paints. These non-toxic paints are quick to dry and feature water clean-up of hands and brushes. The spectrum includes literally hundreds of colors which retain their brilliancy with age. Most of these paints may also be used with fabric medium, which allow their use on clothing.

DecoArt Americana and Delta Ceramcote are the two most readily available paints found in craft stores. Artist-quality Americana includes 172 colors and features the TrueColors line of pure colors. Depending on drying conditions, a second coat may be applied within fifteen to twenty minutes and the paint should be cured completely within twenty-four hours. A protective coat of varnish can be applied about twenty minutes after painting, again depending on drying conditions. Delta Ceramcote is another durable, high quality paint line containing a whopping 241 colors. Its drying time is slightly longer than Americana, at thirty minutes, and may be varnished in two hours. Both paints may be mixed with fabric medium. Acrylic paints may be used on a variety of surfaces. Use on wood, plaster, prepared metal, drywall, ceramics, fabric, poster board, paper, or canvas.

Fabric paints are specifically designed for use on fabrics. Although acrylic paints may be used on fabrics in combination with fabric medium, they tend to soak into the fabric, causing it to stiffen. Acrylics must also be 'heat set' with an iron before washing. Fabric paints 'sit' on top of the fabric, allowing it to remain soft, and they don't need to be heat set. These paints are also known as 'dimensional' paints because of their 'beading' characteristic. This beading aspect lends itself well to other non-fabric crafting projects, such as glitter writing and dimensional painting. The Polymark line consists of seventy-two different paints, and includes glitter, sparkle, shiny, and iridescent paints. The bottles have a fine pointed tip, which allows for easy writing on fabric or other surfaces.

Poster paints are another paint found in the craft paint section of your craft store. It's wonderful for kid's projects, as it easily washes off of skin, and out of most fabrics with soap and water. Twelve fun colors are available in both two and eight ounce bottles.

Maybe you need a paint that's a bit more durable than acrylic paint. DecoArt Ultra Gloss Enamel may be just the paint you're looking for. If properly dried, this paint is safe for outdoor use. It can also be hardened by heat treating in the home oven to provide a dishwasher safe coating for glass, metal, and porcelain. There are forty-five intermixable colors which may be used on wood, paper, ceramics, leather, glass, hard plastic, metal, and poster board.
