G scale model trains are the largest toy trains available. At 1/24 scale, these trains are
huge, requiring a lot of room for a layout. The smallest curve is forty-eight inches in
diameter, so even a modest layout would eat up a full sheet of plywood.
The "G" in G Scale stands for "Garden" and that is really where these large trains belong.
Track can be laid out of doors for year round enjoyment of the model train hobby in the
landscape.
G scale brass train track from LGB and Aristocraft is suitable for installing outdoors
permanently. The track is laid in a similar fashion to the real locomotives. A bed of stone
is put down first, lumber embedded in this gravel, and the track is nailed or screwed to the
lumber.
Durable outdoor accessories like buildings and bridges are commercially available, but part
of the fun of G Scale is building your own. And then you can work in plants and flowers to be
part of the layout. So G scale trains are suitable for someone who is interested in both
gardening and model trains. Or a joint venture between two people - one gardener and a model
railroader!
The three biggest manufacturers supplying the G Scale train market are Bachman, LGB, and
Aristocraft, though there are others. Bachman also manufactures track, but their stainless
steel track is not suitable for an outdoor layout. LGB is the "top of the line". It is German
manufactured and is extremely high quality.
If you have the space a very impressive layout can be built indoors. Or put them up near the
ceiling on custom built shelving. The trains bring excitement to any family or entertainment
room. Properly built and lit the trains will mesmerize and entertain your guests for many
hours.
