![]() Bachman E-Z Track is an interlocking track system which has the roadbed already attached. The line includes numerous radius curves, switches, straights, and miscellaneous pieces which make the system tremendously versatile. The track is easy and quick to lay, and can be set up anywhere, temporarily or in a permanent layout. Woodland Scenics is a company which has manufactured quality railroad scenery for years. They have recently developed a new underlayment system which makes scenery building quick and easy. Foam risers, profile boards, incline sets, and other accessories help the model railroader build up a layout much faster and with less mess than all previous systems. If you've always thought a train layout was neat, but thought you didn't have the space for it, remember - there is a layout for just about any situation. Theoretically, a layout can take up as much space as you want to devote to it. You can set up a 'train room' in an unused bedroom, or other area. Basements are the traditional place for a layout, but don't feel bound by tradition when planning your layout. But what if you don't have a spare room or basement? Sometimes its a challenge finding the space for a train, but there's a solution to every problem. This column won't try to describe layout building, as there are many good layout books on the market. The layouts in this column are found in these publications - 48 Top Notch Plans By Model Railroader Magazine, 20 Custom Designed Track Plans By John Armstrong, Model Railroading In Small Spaces By Mat Chibbaro, and Small Railroads You Can Build by Model Railroader magazine. There are many other books available with literally hundreds of layout plans to choose from. The Come And Go Layout Design is for the modeler who may have a small area for display, and larger adjacent areas for loops and staging areas. The layout features a long mainline run between two loops or staging areas. The loops and staging areas are used to store excess stock, and turn the train around. The long mainline run goes through the display room and is the only area which needs landscaping. A Rail fan’s Dream Layout is for the person who likes a challenge. The layout is cylindrical in shape, and has a small electrical motor to turn it. A rheostat controls the speed of the motor. Adjusting the motor speed make the train appear to stay in one place, while the scenery moves in relation to the observer. The layout requires only sixteen square feet of space. Western Colorado Railway - A Mushroom In The Bedroom is a multi-deck layout which allows trains to move between levels. The trains go up and down using a helix. Now you may wonder what a helix is. Think of it as a spiral staircase for trains - the trains go up and down a spiral ramp. It's a neat layout to see operate. The Third Street Industrial District is a shelf, or switching layout. Shelf layouts don't need a lot of space to set up. As the name implies, a shelf is all that is needed. The layouts can be enlarged, or incorporated into a larger layout if more space becomes available later on. The Brookville Division is a coffee-table layout. It is built in a glass topped coffee-table, using an N scale train. The table is only 24" by 36". It's a neat little layout for apartments and mobile homes. A similar layout, only larger to fit in a bar-top is The Rocky Gap & Dickerson . The dimensions are 24" X 60". The bar-top is hinged to allow access to the train. The train makes a great conversation piece in a family or entertainment room. Other places to hide layouts are in fold up cabinets built specifically for the purpose. The layout is folded up into the cabinet when not in use. The trains can be run on to a shelf at the rear of the cabinet when not in use. All scenery and buildings are fastened down securely. Rolling layouts can be built on wheels to be rolled into a closet or under a bed when not in use. In short, you will find a layout plan for just about any situation in one of these books. As you can see, if you love trains, there are many unique layout plans for a variety of situations. If you start today, you'll enjoy model railroading much sooner. ![]() To Check Availability and Purchase Products Featured Here Visit Our Ebay Store Plum Creek Toy and Hobby |
