The layout you’ve been working so diligently on for so long is now looking pretty good. The trains are running and the land has been developed into farms, homes, towns and businesses. Trees and shrubs are growing and the lakes and streams are providing a source of water for your miniature world. It is finally finished. Or so you thought! It’s time to think about adding some character to the layout with some details. Start with people and animals. You can add shoppers to the sidewalk along the streets. Populate the farms and homesteads with farmers and animals. Fishermen and outdoorsmen add substance to lakes and wooded areas. You can find just about any figure you desire for your layout. The addition of one or two scenery kits around the layout will add immeasurably to the character of the layout. These kits typically have all the detail parts necessary to build a mini-scene into the layout, or build it up and place in a display case to decorate a desk or shelf. The selection of kits is extensive and includes cemeteries, playgrounds, tree house, junkyard, and even a moonshine still. Operating accessories add life to any layout and include street lights, crossing gates and semaphores. Make your layout unique with an operating gristmill or windmill. Burning building kits can be added and the addition of a smoker unit will add realism to the scene. To the burning building scene, fire fighting equipment and fireman add drama and action. Sound can also be incorporated into the train layout with the addition of small speakers, which are installed in the landscaping. Simple sound systems reproduce stock train sounds such as train whistles, chug chug, and track sounds. Advanced sound systems recreate many other sounds, as well as allow you to add sounds of your own creation. You can also add a circus to the layout. Many operating circus rides can be built from kits. These neat little kits include an operating carousel, Ferris wheel, spider ride - there is even a working roller coaster. These kits are fun to build, but aren’t for the faint-hearted kit builder. They are a bit of a challenge, but are well worth the effort. They really do work, using small electric motors which draw off of the train transformer. It is best to have a small transformer used only for these rides, as they will draw power away from the train. You can also add circus animals, performers, and top it all off with a circus train to haul it all on! Small details such as mailboxes, fencing, telephone poles, and cars and trucks all add to the illusion of a fully developed miniature world. As you can see, the train layout is never really done. After the main construction is done, there is always something new to plan and add. With a little modification, just about anything can be put into the layout. ![]() To Check Availability and Purchase Products Featured Here Visit Our Ebay Store Plum Creek Toy and Hobby |
