Accessory Parts For Pinewood Derby Cars - Metal Lead Free Weights

Metal weights are an essential accessory part for pinewood derby cars. The metal weights add critical ounces to a pinewood derby car in a race derby. Take care that you observe the weight standards set by the race committee - most races have a weight limit placed on each pine car. Pinewood derby race cars may weigh no more than the proscribed weight, usually five ounces.
Weigh your pinewood derby car and weights. Due to differences in scales, it may be better to leave the pinewood car a little heavy and adjust it on derby race day. If necessary, remove a portion of the metal weight accessory part following the molded in lines. Use a hacksaw, pliers, or your hands.
The heavier your pinewood derby car, the faster it will go. Pinewood adjustable metal weights allow car weight adjustment, even on race day. Soft as lead weights, these accessory parts are lead free, and are available in a variety of styles. Check local rules for maximum weight (usually 5 ounces) and minium clearance under the car (usually 3/8 inch from pine car bottom to the track).
Axles and metal weights must be flush with the bottom to have 3/8 inch from the bottom of the pine car to the racing surface. The metal weights can be recessed into the bottom of the car.

Rectangle Lead Free Metal Weights
Flat, tapered, or square metal weights may be screwed to bottom, top, or sides of the pinewood derby car. Break off unneeded sections to achieve desired metal weight. To cut the channel for bottom mount, lay the weight on the bottom of the derby car. With a pencil, trace an outline of the weight on the bottom of the pinewood car. Using a hobby knife, carefully carve the channel out. Make sure the channel on the pinewood derby car is deep enough so the metal weight accessort part is flush with the bottom of the car. After attaching, weigh the car and remove the excess metal weight. Using a pliers, break off as much as is needed to bring the pine car to weight specifications for the derby race. Pinewood derby car metal weights are lead free and safe for kids.

Cylinder Lead Free Metal Weights
For round or cylindrical metal weights drill a 3/8 inch hole in the rear of the car and insert metal weight. Weights may be broken easily to achieve the desired weight for your pinewood derby car.

Stick On Lead Free Metal Weights
Break off as needed, peel off the paper backing and stick to the bottom, side, or top of the pinewood car. For bottom mount a channel needs to be cut into the bottom of the pine car as per the instructions above.
