Building a wood bird feeder from a kit is easy and a great project for kids. The kits can be assembled in one session, another can be used to paint and decorate. Bird feeders and houses may be painted on the outside, but should be left unfinished on the inside.
bird feeder parts

bird feeder sides 1. Nail feeder box sides together, driving the nails through the long sides into shorter sides. Use four nails as shown on the drawing.
bird feeder box 2. Center bottom panel over bird feeder box and nail in place, using six nails as shown. Further building steps below.
bird feeder roof support 3. Turn the feeder box over, position the roof support in the center of the box, pointed side up. Drive nails through box sides into the roof support - use two nails on each side.
bird feeder roof panels 4. Nail the two roof panels to the roof support.
bird feeder screw eyes 5. Nail the top panel on to the roof. Screw eye hooks into the top panel 1 ¼ inch from each end.
bird feeder 6. The wooden bird feeder is now complete. You may now paint the feeder if desired.
As you can see, the bird feeder kits are simple to build and will give the kids a great little wood project to take home and use. And they will learn about nature as they watch and learn to identify the birds which use the finished feeder or bird house.
